On September 17, the Korean media outlet Insight reported on the four reasons why fans are considering the possibility of BLACKPINK’s disbandment ahead of their contract renewal.
First, BLACKPINK which debuted in 2016 is set to have its contract renewal season with YG Entertainment in 2023. Although BLACKPINK has been on the road to success since its debut, fans are still carefully mentioning the possible disbandment for various factors.
Second, K-pop enthusiasts especially BLINKs (fandom of BLACKPINK) showed their concern about how the quartet is fast approaching the infamous “7-Year Curse.” In context, seven years is the limit of most idol contracts with their agency and often, groups part ways or a member withdraws from the team during this time; hence the nickname.
Internet users were especially concerned if BLACKPINK will end up like their senior group 2NE1, who disbanded in their seventh year as well in 2016 despite being at the peak of their popularity.
Second, some fans were worried about the “Shut Down” MV featuring a large number of scenes of their previous hit songs, such as “DDU DU DDU DU,” “Whistle,” and “BOOMBAYAH.”
Some viewers implied that “Shut Down” feels like a homage to being able to look back on BLACKPINK’s all-time success. Fans then felt as if the four-member team was organizing all their activities prior to parting ways.
Fourth and last, Jennie, a member who has been rumored to be dating BTS V almost every day from May also sparked speculation if this would become a huge variable when she renews her contract.

However, most fans are saying that there seems to be no reason for BLACKPINK to not renew their contracts with YG.
This is because it’s a win-win situation for both sides. BLACKPINK was initially known in the K-pop scene thanks to its agency, and YG was able to sustain its company position despite the disbandment of 2NE1 and BIGBANG hiatus, thanks BLACKPINK.
Second, the group comprised of Jisoo, Jennie, Lisa and Rosé already established a family-like relationship, which is not easy to be destroyed. Not only among members, but the group members were also close to their dancers and producers including Teddy.

Amid constant noise regarding the disbandment and renewal of the contract, attention is being paid to whether BLACKPINK will be able to be reborn as a long-lived idol just like Girls’ Generation as it succeeds in renewing its contract.
On the other hand, BLACKPINK on September 16 made its much-anticipated comeback with its second studio album, “BORN PINK.”
